The Scottish Ballet: Destined to Become a Classic
The Limon Dance Company has premiered an exceptional production of Shakespeare's work, full length in 3 acts, with a superb score. The costumes are appropriately medieval, with craggy sets and lighting, and no kilts or tutus. The score is remarkable, with hints of bagpipes, chimes, and drums, prominent bells, via string and woodwind drones. The choreography featured bits of Scottish reels and a brief sword dance, as well as a lovely pas de deux by MacB and Lady MacB. There is a superstition in the theater not to mention the name of this piece, and I will adhere to that tradition. Otherwise, the music and dance blended beautifully, although there were two discordant pieces: a dance during the banquet scene that seemed more like bunny hop meets hora, and in Act 3, the woodsprites theme was reminiscent of a bad Cold War era oompah band. The live performance of the score by the Raleigh Chamber Orchestra was outstanding. The Limon Dance Company, a very good young company, features excellent soloists. Their weaknesses are best seen in the corps de ballet pieces, where the details and synchrony need work, detracting from the overall vision with leaps and jetes of different heights, pirouettes of different speeds, different hand and arm positions, etc.
